ISO/IEC 27701 is an international standard that defines a management system designed to help organisations protect privacy when processing personal data. It builds on the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27002 to provide a framework for personal data protection that integrates with an existing information security management system.
Chinese manufacturers exporting medical devices to EU countries must meet not only the MDR (EU Medical Device Regulation) but also the data protection regulation [(EU) 2016/679, i.e. the GDPR].
The GDPR is an EU regulation with binding force that sets out legal obligations for processing personal data, whereas ISO 27701 is an international standard that provides a voluntary certification framework and a structured approach for organisations implementing the GDPR.
ISO/IEC 27701 (Privacy Information Management System, PIMS) requires a documented management system. The traditional route is the extension model: adding privacy-specific requirements to an existing ISO/IEC 27001 information security management system (ISMS) to form an integrated ISMS+PIMS system.
